Washington — REAL ID via EDL / EID

Washington meets federal REAL ID standards with an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) or Enhanced Identification Card (EID). Standard WA licenses are not accepted for covered federal air-travel ID purposes after May 7, 2025.

How to recognize WA cards

• Enhanced (EDL / EID): REAL ID–compliant. Marked with a U.S. flag (not a star). Acceptable for domestic air travel and, for EDL/EID holders who are U.S. citizens, as a land/sea border alternative to a passport for re-entry from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean (per WA DOL) — not for international air travel.
• Standard license / ID: Often marked “Federal Limits Apply.” Still valid for driving and many everyday ID uses in-state, but not for boarding domestic flights when REAL ID enforcement applies.

Who can get an EDL / EID

Per WA DOL (last checked 2026-09-05), you must be a U.S. citizen and provide:

• Social Security number
• Proof of citizenship
• Proof of identity
• Proof of Washington State residency

Green cards and work visas are not a path to an EDL/EID. Non-citizens: use other TSA-acceptable ID (passport, etc.) or ask DOL what credential options apply to you — do not invent rules from this page.

Document checklist (use DOL’s tool)

Do not rely on a blog list. WA DOL publishes an enhanced document checklist / tool and printable checklists (multiple languages) on the EDL page.

1. Open Get an EDL.
2. Run the online enhanced document tool or download the printable checklist.
3. Gather originals / certified documents as DOL requires (photocopies often fail).
4. Have your SSN ready (you may not need to show the physical card — follow DOL instructions).
5. Bring payment for published EDL fees (amounts are on the DOL page; they change).

Appointment & visit notes (as published)

• Apply in person at a driver licensing office after collecting documents.
• Make an appointment through WA DOL’s official scheduling path (linked from the EDL page / office finder). See also Appointments.
• Expect document review and an in-person interview; photo will be taken.
• DOL notes applications are accepted up to 60 minutes before closing — still leave buffer for review.
• Allow about 2 weeks for the EDL in the mail (per DOL). You may receive a temporary credential; DOL states you cannot use the temporary EDL at border crossings.

Fee tables live on the official EDL page (first-time vs upgrade, year remaining, technology fee). Do not use amounts from this workshop as a quote — open DOL and confirm before you go.

Do you need it?

• Maybe not if you already fly with a U.S. passport (or other TSA-acceptable ID) and do not need an EDL for land/sea border convenience.
• Yes, plan ahead if you want a WA license/ID that works at TSA without carrying a passport.
