Document gathering checklist

A calm prep list so you are not hunting papers the night before. Every state has its own accepted list. Finish on the official checklist for your DMV / DOL.

What you will usually need to prove

Federal REAL ID rules push states to verify identity, date of birth, Social Security number (or ineligibility), lawful status, and residence. Exact document combinations differ.

Category Common examples (not universal) Prep tip
Identity / DOB Certified U.S. birth certificate; unexpired U.S. passport or passport card; certain certificates of citizenship / naturalization Order a certified birth certificate early if you lack one. Hospital keepsakes and photocopies often fail.
Social Security SSN provided verbally and verified with SSA; sometimes the card; or proof you are not eligible Legal name must match SSA. Fix name mismatches before the DMV trip when you can.
Lawful status Often covered by U.S. passport / birth certificate for citizens; non-citizens follow state lists (visa, I-94, green card, etc.) Bring unexpired immigration docs if that is your path. Do not guess from blogs.
Residency / address Utility bills, lease, mortgage, bank/government mail — often two documents from different sources Must usually show current name + residential address. P.O. boxes are often rejected as the residence proof.
Name change Marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order — certified as required If your identity document uses a prior name, bring the linking name-change chain your state requires.

Folder checklist (day-before)

  1. Printed or saved copy of your state’s official document checklist.
  2. Identity / citizenship / lawful-status originals or certified copies (as required).
  3. Residency proofs (count them — many states want two).
  4. SSN ready; confirm name spelling matches SSA.
  5. Payment method for license / REAL ID fees (and any published surcharge).
  6. Appointment confirmation (if you booked one) from the .gov system only.
  7. Old license / ID if you have one.
