Oregon — REAL ID checklist

Oregon offers standard and REAL ID–compliant driver’s licenses, permits, and ID cards. REAL ID cards are marked with a star in the upper right. You must apply in person with original documents.

Do you need an Oregon REAL ID?

Per OR DMV messaging (last checked 2026-09-05):

• Likely yes if you are 18+ and will fly commercially in the U.S. without a passport (or other acceptable ID), or you need ID for certain federal facilities / military bases / nuclear plants.
• Maybe later if you already have a star on your card, prefer to use a passport, do not fly, or are under 18 (TSA generally does not require ID for children under 18 on domestic flights — confirm with your airline).

REAL ID 1-2-3 (OR DMV framing)

1. One proof of identity (original or certified — electronic copies usually not OK for identity).
2. Two proofs of current Oregon residential address from two different sources (no P.O. Box for the residence requirement as published).
3. Allow about three weeks for the card in the mail after DMV accepts and scans your documents.

Also: prove date of birth / lawful status as required, and provide your Social Security number verbally if eligible (physical card often not required; name must match SSA records). 2. Optional: skim the English flyer PDF for category examples (identity, name, address).
3. Order certified birth certificates early if you need one — they take time.
4. Confirm your current legal name matches your Social Security record before you go.

Appointment & visit notes (as published)

• You cannot get an original REAL ID fully online — in-person visit required with hardcopy documents.
• Appointments on DMV2U are “best assurance” for service; OR notes they may be available but are not strictly required. Offices differ in slots; new slots often appear on a rolling window — check frequently.
• Bring the $30 REAL ID surcharge in addition to other applicable issuance fees (amount per OR DMV; confirm live).
• After acceptance, you get a temporary paper ID. OR DMV states TSA will not accept the temporary paper ID at security — plan travel only after the permanent card arrives (up to ~3 weeks).
• DMV scans and stores REAL ID documents (OR FAQ notes retention on the order of 10 years).
